ReflectionA fundamental part of our job as educators refers to not only the content we are required to teach but more importantly our pedagogical understanding of how to teach it. I understand that the content itself is highlighted by the Australian curriculum, which gives a clear overview of what should be taught and specifically pinpoints achievement standards based on the expected level of competence for each year level (ACARA, 2010). As a facilitator of this curriculum I will aspire to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of my students in order to provide them with the foundation required to become a successful, lifelong learner (ACARA, 2010).
What I believe is essential to the teaching process is designing and implementing the curriculum content in an engaging and effective learning experience. This is evidenced by a science unit that I collaboratively designed with a peer which is designed around key content from the science curriculum whilst still embedding relevant cross curriculum priorities and general capabilities. These include Indigenous Australian perspectives, critical and creative thinking as well as everyday literacy. In particular, this unit also utilises ICT experiences that facilitate, support and deepen the interactions that the students have with the content of the unit (Churchill et al., 2011). I believe this unit highlights my ability to select content and organise it in a logical sequence of activities that enables the student to successfully demonstrate what they have learnt and for the teacher to assess accordingly. |
